Al-Istifada al-Ilmiyya History
Since 2005, the birthday festivities of His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, the head of the Dawoodi Bohra Muslim community, have been marked by a season of study and development. Al-Istifada al-Ilmiyya is a series of educational seminars and workshops representing a time-honored Fatemi educational system. Thousands of community members worldwide come to Surat, India, for this event.
At its core, Al-Istifada al-Ilmiyya is inspired by the Islamic practice of always pursuing knowledge, which was mandated by the Prophet Mohammed for every Muslim man and woman. Even if tremendous obstacles must be overcome, Fatimi teachings emphasize the responsibility to pursue knowledge. Ultimately, acquiring knowledge and putting it into practice leads to a full and purposeful existence; it is a process that goes “from the cradle to the tomb.”
Al-Istifada al-Ilmiyya – An Educational Event
Since 2017, al-Istifada al-Ilmiyya has become an annual educational event that attracts a great number of community members from all over the world. His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin is hosting the event at Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah, the community’s top educational center, in Surat, India. Al-Istifada symbolizes the Dawoodi Bohras’ ancient educational system. Participants in al-Istifada devote these days exclusively to the pursuit of knowledge and personal development, although the majority of Muslims visit local masjids and community centers throughout the year.
Students, professors, and alumni of Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah, as well as community officials, including educators, administrators, and amils (leaders of local Bohra communities), travel from all over the world to attend al-Istifada in order to develop their professional and interpersonal skills and knowledge. Bohra men and women of various ages and backgrounds, many of whom have sought higher education in a variety of disciplines and include prominent professionals, educators, entrepreneurs, and home managers, are also in attendance.
In accordance with the Fatimi concept, the educational experience includes lectures on life skills, health screenings, sports, and other activities. The daily asbaaq courses, for which many big groups are organized according to the level of the texts being taught and which last from morning to lunchtime with breaks for tea and lunch, are the most important event of the week. Each group examines a mix of Fatimi theological, philosophical, and Quranic interpretation books.
Evenings, and frequently nights, are devoted to organized or freestyle sports and exercise on Aljamea’s sports field also known as Khaimat Ur Riyazat, while afternoons are devoted to gender-specific educational lectures and programs. The workshops address a variety of self-improvement and administrative abilities, including communication and teaching techniques, as well as organizational and management skills. Al-Istifada reaches its climax on the day of the birth anniversary of the late Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin when Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin delivers a sermon attended by tens of thousands of community members.
Al-Istifada al-Ilmiyya exemplifies the devotion of the Dawoodi Bohras to education by honoring the historic Fatemi educational system and expressing its philosophy of embracing what is advantageous from both the old and the modern. The Bohras believe that pursuing education is a lifetime journey to grow intellect and spirit, accompanied by a continuing effort to assist mankind, which is the objective of all education.
